For numerous reasons, people decide to live together but they do not get married. Although the motivation not to get married is typically a financial one, sometimes people do not realize that even without a marriage there can be legal implications to such a relationship. In California we have what are known as "palimony suits" which sometimes arise when a relationship wherein two parties lived together comes to an end.
